Introduction

Travel plans are often fluid, and the journey can take unexpected turns. This year has certainly been a testament to that for us. Amid the excitement of exploration, we faced a significant family emergency that reshaped our adventures. We want to share our experiences, the lessons learned, and what lies ahead.

Who Are We and Why should you Care

If you’re new here, we are Joel & Michelle, full-time travel bloggers and YouTubers. As I write this we have been traveling full-time for the last 5 years. We love to travel slowly or “slow travel” by staying in each destination for weeks and months instead of the traditional fast travel of a vacation. As you can imagine spending so much time abroad is both a blessing and a curse at times.

Our Original Plans

Back in March, we envisioned an itinerary that included Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey before heading to Southeast Asia. However, life threw us a curveball when a family emergency required us to change our course.

Facing Challenges

In late April, while we were in Albania, we received alarming news about my sister’s health. She faced two brain aneurysms, brain bleeds, and a stroke all at once. Being so far away during such a crisis was daunting and wrought with feelings of fear and helplessness.

Thankfully my sister is regaining her speech and control of her right hand side but we had to quickly evaluate our travel plans. After careful consideration, we decided to return to the United States, while still planning to continue our travels through Romania until the end of September.

The Importance of Community

Navigating the complexities of travel during this time highlighted the importance of community. In Albania, our friends and fellow travelers were invaluable, helping to alleviate our feelings of isolation. They provided emotional support and encouraged us to engage in activities that allowed us to briefly escape the stress. Building a network of friends, whether they’re locals or fellow travelers, can provide much-needed comfort during trying times.

Planning for Emergencies

This experience emphasized the importance of emergency preparedness when traveling. It’s essential to set aside emergency funds for unexpected situations that might require swift action, such as flights or accommodations.

Additionally, consider obtaining medical travel insurance—a safety net that provides peace of mind and coverage in case of unforeseen health issues. We recommended researching options like SafetyWing or Genki, which many travelers find beneficial. It’s important to understand each policy specifics, including age restrictions and what’s covered.

Looking Ahead

Currently, we’re back in Nashville, preparing to head to Phoenix to support my sister. After that, Southeast Asia awaits! We are thrilled to finally visit Thailand and Vietnam, meeting friends along the way and experiencing new cultures.

If you can, consider donating to my sister’s GoFundMe campaign and sharing this article with fellow travelers.

As we continue this journey, we embrace flexibility and adaptability. While plans may shift, the connections we make and the lessons we learn shape our adventures. Thank you for following our journey, and we hope our experiences offer insight and inspiration as you navigate your own travel plans.
